   Service-Learning and Community Engagement

We strive to make a difference!

For years, Augsburg College has been at the forefront of experiential learning in higher education. This commitment to service-learning, civic and community engagement, and volunteerism grows out of Augsburg's belief that being a good neighbor and an active participant in the life of our city is an essential component of a liberal arts education. As a college dedicated to helping students do the fruitful work of discerning their vocation in the world, CSWL's cadre of opportunities for experiential learning are the ideal proving ground where students can discover the work in which their "deep gladness meets the world's deep hunger."

Hey Bonners! Please answer the following question:
Considering your placement as a community, describe one asset of this community and describe one social challenge for the community. Be specific!

Trinity gives the community a place to go after school for homework help and a safeplace. One social challenge of the community is the diversity of the neighborhood.

Kayla, explain how the diversity of the neighborhood is a social challenge. I think there would be people who both would disagree and agree... What is one asset of the Trinity community?

The VOA community is an asset to the students that attend because it provides a learning environment for students who don't want to be in the public schools (or have had less than wonderful experiences in them), but still want to obtain a diploma. One major social challenge is the fact that these are students who formerly struggled in school, and many of them lack the motivation to complete daily work.

The VOA is an asset because the students that attend their have not succeeded at a public high school, and are therefore given an opportunity to finish high school and continue with their lives. A social challenge is that the students have came from different backgrounds, some with more education than others and some with personal issues they face that causes dilemmas in their school performance and their behavior as well.

Campus Kitchen is very amazing program that sympathizes with those who are in need of a little help and provides food for them. The teamwork is another great asset. I would not say there is a social challenge in this community. Maybe when we deliver food, there might be folks who appreciate our aid but do not care for a small chat. However, that is only SOME people and I have just started this shift.

An asset of the Personal Finance Center is that they are reaching a group of people who are stable financially but have little to no assets of their own and to gain financial stability by adding assets and improving saving habits they can use the program with a 4:1 match and use the money for secondary education, first home purchase and for starting a business. This helps the overall community since its educating members how to use money responsibly and the importance of building assets for themselves and their family. A social challenge for the community PFC serves is that many do not have credit established making dreams of owning a home or getting loans hard to obtain.

One asset of The People's Center is in the simple fact that they are reaching out to children to help them. It is a great program where the kids can get help with their homework, be in a safe environment, and be able to have fun. One challenge for the community at People's Center is the cultural barrier. Many people do not see the need to reach out and help people of other cultures simply because they fear what they do not understand. Just because these children are from a different culture does not mean they do not have the strive or desire to learn just as any other child.

One asset of the Augsburg Fairview Academy is that it gives students an alternative place to attend school as well as a place to learn different types of medical screenings and training. It allows students who may not fit in at a regular school to excel in a different type of school. This school allows their students to be a step ahead of the rest when it comes to the medical field. One social challenge for the school is that the students that attend the school don't always go to class. It is very common for many of the students to not come to school. This could be because socially the students don't think that attending school is as important. Getting the students to realize the importance of going to school is definitely a challenge.

An asset of Trinity Lutheran is that not only can kids go there for help with homework but it is a safe place to hang out. A social challenge for Trinity is the limited English skills.

The Minnesota Internship Center (MNIC) has a strong sense of community. I have been able to get to know the teachers and build relationships with the students. I enjoy going to work and helping to teach the students. I also like being able to learn from them as well. One challenge that I've encountered at MNIC is the language barrier. It is sometimes difficult to communicate with both students and teachers. However, this challenge has helped me to learn to communicate better and to build patience. Learning to communicate with each other is something that we all work on together at MNIC. It makes the job more challenging at times, but everyone feels successful when we are able to communicate with one another.

An asset of Trinity Lutheran is the small, diverse community it is within itself- everyone helps each other and can find a place within that community. A social challenge is the cultural and lingual differences that can make relations a challenge.

At the Employment Action Center there is a strong community, between the people who come here for services, the employees, and the volunteers. A positive assest of such a community is that everybody learns from each other. Nobody is 'higher' than anybody else, everybody here is working towards acheiving something. We help the people who come here gain the skills and resources they need to be sucessful, and in return they help us determine which resources we need to provide. This also poses a challenge on the EAC community, trying to determine which resources will be the most helpful and utilizing those resources to acheive everyone's goals.
